HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Olean Oilers were able to answer a 2-1 spread with a 5-2 victory over the Genesee Rapids Sunday in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex, Sunday afternoon.
Matt Schneider (Mercyhurst) go things started for Olean with a single to center field. His teammate Dave Vaccaro (St. Bonaventure) followed suit and hit one to left field for a base knock, moving Schneider over to second base and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly. Domonic Cecere (Mercyhurst) singled to third base and drove in the Oilers first run of the game for a score of 1-0.
The Rapids answered in the bottom of the third after a sequence of a dropped third strike, hit by pitch, and an RBI single from Philip Wells (Baldwin Wallace) to drive in Wes Brown (William Carey) knotting the score at one run a piece.
Genesee continued this momentum in the bottom of the fourth. Mark McKenna (Canisius College) paced the offense with a single to right field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Daniel Lockwood (St. Edward’s) landed an RBI on a single to center field taking a 2-1 lead.
Lockwood stole second but would be left on base after the Oiler’s pitcher Shawn Dubin (Buffalo) set down the next two Rapids down with on punch outs.
Dubin finished on the mound after four innings only allowing two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts.
Olean erased the 2-1 lead in their next attempt from the plate. Cole Peterson (St. Bonaventure) took the first pitch given and sent it to the third basemen for a single. Peterson advanced to second after a stolen base. Aaron Phillips (St. Bonaventure) moved Peterson to third on a single. Phillips put himself in scoring position at second on a stolen base. Alex Griffith (Pittburgh) cleared the bases with a two-run double over the left fielder which would make the score 3-2 in favor of the Oilers.
The Oilers poured it on in the top of the sixth. Olean loaded the bases after two walks and a single. Phillips sent a shot deep right field to bring in two more runs to widen the gap 5-2.
Genesee was not able to come back from the Oilers 5-2 lead. Multiple hit performances from the Rapids would be credited to Wollenburg, 3-for-5, Wells 2-for-5, and McKenna for a 3-for-3effor. Jacob Burlingame (Canisius College) will be handed the loss after giving up five runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts.
Olean’s Peterson would go 3-for-5, and Phillips, Griffith, and Vaccaro all went 2-for-5. Phillips and Griffith drove in two apiece.
Kaden Darrow (Marymount) picked up the win after he tossed two innings giving up no runs on three hits. Nolan Hunt (Canisius) tossed three scoreless innings for the save.
