INDIANAPOLIS – Four members of the Northern Kentucky University baseball team received postseason awards from the Horizon League on Tuesday, as voted on by the League’s head coaches. Seniors Quint Heady and Logan Spurlin and sophomore Trey Ganns were named Second Team All-League while Will Haueter was selected to the All-Freshman team.
Entering Horizon League Championship play, Heady leads the Norse with a .322 average to sit among the League’s top 10 batters. The Louisville, Kentucky, native has batted .356 in HL contests this season and leads NKU with 16 stolen bases on 20 attempts. Heady is second on the team in RBI with 28 and home runs with six.
Spurlin earned a spot on the All-League Second Team after concluding the regular season with a .312 batting average. The senior catcher leads the Horizon League in runners caught stealing with 23. His team-leading 38 RBI also rank among the League’s top-10. Spurlin has a .522 slugging percentage after clubbing a team-high 10 home runs, the second-most in the League.
Ganns, a Burlington, Kentucky, native, has appeared in all but two contests this season and earned his postseason nod as a utility player after splitting time between first base, designated hitter, and eight pitching appearances. The sophomore sports a .286 batting average and has posted 21 RBI at the plate this season. He has totaled 47.0 innings pitched and has accrued a 4.21 ERA and 3-3 record. Ganns has fanned 45 while issuing just 15 walks.
Haueter, NKU’s lone All-Freshman team selection, leads the HL in doubles with 18, which is tied for 31st in the NCAA and 10th in a single season in NKU program history. The Canton, Ohio native posted a .319 average in his rookie campaign and appeared in 46 of NKU’s 53 contests. Haueter is third on the squad in RBI with 24.
The quartet of standout players helped the Norse to advance to their first postseason tournament since transitioning to Division I. NKU posted a 20-33 overall record and 9-21 HL record to clinch the No. 6 seed in the Horizon League Championship. The Norse open the tournament on Wednesday when they take on No. 3 seed Valparaiso at 4 p.m. at Nischwitz Stadium in Fairborn, Ohio.
