HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Horizon League officially released the 2016 Baseball Championship bracket on Saturday. With Youngstown State’s 4-0 loss to Valparaiso on Thursday, Northern Kentucky secured the No. 6 seed and will face the No. 3 seed Valparaiso at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25 at Wright State’s Nischwitz Stadium in Fairborn, Ohio.
The Norse are advancing to their first postseason tournament since transitioning to Division I. NKU posted a 20-33 overall record and 9-21 mark in the Horizon League this season.
The Horizon League Championship runs through Saturday, May 28. Teams with a first-round loss are eliminated from the tournament. Subsequent rounds are double-elimination format.
NKU has a 2-3 record against Valpo this season and swept the Crusaders in a doubleheader on May 8.
A first-round victory on Wednesday would advance NKU to the quarterfinal round where the Norse would take on the No. 1 seed and defending champion Wright State on Thursday, May 26 at 11 a.m.
The other first-round game features No. 4 UIC vs. No. 5 Oakland at noon on Wednesday while No. 1 Wright State and No. 2 Milwaukee, open tournament play on Thursday.
All games throughout the tournament will be carried live on ESPN3. Live audio will also be available for NKU’s games. Links to all broadcasts and live stats can be found on NKUNorse.com.
