BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo baseball team dropped its series opener with Bowling Green, 8-2, at Amherst Audubon Field on Friday afternoon. Only two of the Falcons’ eight runs in the game were earned due to four UB errors.
Bowling Green (17-35, 7-15 MAC) hit three straight two-out singles in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Falcons extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth inning after capitalizing on a UB error and scoring three unearned runs. A UB fielding error with two-outs in the top of the fifth inning, followed by a single, extended the Bowling Green lead to 5-0.
After the Falcons extended their lead to 6-0 in the top of the sixth inning, Vinny Mallaro led off the bottom of the inning by crushing his 11th home run of the season over the wall in left centerfield. Chris Kwitzer followed with his 11th double of the year, but the Bulls couldn’t capitalize.
Bowling Green scored two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to extend its lead to 8-1. In the bottom of the seventh, Ben Haefner drove in Alex Thrower with a single to right field to cut the BG lead to 8-2. Haefner and Kwitzer had a team-best two hits in the game for UB.
Alec Touhy took the loss for the Bulls, but only allowed two earned runs and struck out seven over seven innings.
The teams will be back at it on Friday afternoon at 1 pm at Amherst Audubon Field.
