ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Visiting George Mason snuck past the St. Bonaventure University baseball team, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field to even the weekend Atlantic 10 series at a game apiece.

St. Bonaventure (22-19-1, 7-10 Atlantic 10) led early following an RBI double off the bat off Tyler Kirwan to score two runs in the second.

That advantage stuck until the sixth when the Patriots (16-30, 5-12) knotted the score with a two-RBI single from Ryan Tassone.

Mason then pushed ahead in a wild seventh inning. Alejandro Aponte singled to lead off and seemingly came in to score the lead run when Frank Sturek put down a bunt single and the ensuing throw kicked away down the right field corner. Sturek, however, was called out for interference and Aponte was sent back to first base with one out. A single from Caleb Walls moved runners to first and second before Michael Smith broke the tie with a base hit. Later in the inning a sacrifice fly stretched the visitors’ lead to two.

Bona threatened in the ninth. Thad Johnson delivered a single through the right side to score Taishi Terashima, moving runners to first and second. The Bonnies would leave the tying run in scoring position, however, as a ground out ended the game.

Connor Grey (2-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs in 6.1 innings. The senior did not walk a batter and struck out eight. Aaron Phillips threw 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.

Mason starter Joe Williams (3-6) earned the win after surrendering two runs on eight hits in his 6.2 innings. Zach Mort picked up his fifth save by working the ninth.

The two teams will settle the series with the rubber game on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for noon.
