SYRACUSE, NY – Byron Buxton led off the game with a home run but it wasn’t enough as the Syracuse Chiefs scored seven runs in the first three innings including a five-run third to beat the Rochester Red Wings 8-3 Tuesday at NBT Bank Stadium.
The Red Wings (11-15) jumped out to an early lead on the second pitch of the game from AJ Cole (3-1) as Buxton took him deep to left. It was Buxton’s second Triple-A homer and first of the season.
The Chiefs (15-9) scored one run in the first and second innings against Logan Darnell (2-3) to take a 2-1 lead. The Chiefs then scored five runs in the third, four of which charged to Darnell, to up their advantage to 7-1. Darnell was charged with six runs on seven hits and two walks with no strikeouts in 2.1 innings after throwing a complete game shutout in his last start.
Rochester cut the lead to 7-3 in the fifth thanks to Juan Centeno’s first homer as a Wing and first in over a year to open the frame and Buxton, who walked and advanced to second on a passed ball, scored on a James Beresford single. Cole was finished after the fifth, charged with three runs, two earned, on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
The Red Wings managed just six hits as the Chiefs bullpen tossed 4.0 scoreless innings.
