KINGSTON, R.I. – St. Bonaventure led late, but Rhode Island rallied for a 6-3 victory on Sunday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
The Rams (16-19, 8-4 Atlantic 10) scored two runs on three hits in the second inning and that score held until the fifth when the Bonnies cut the deficit in half with an RBI double from Cole Peterson in the fifth.
Bona tied the game with another run in the sixth. Tyler Walter reached on a one-out infield single and moved to second on another base hit from Ted Dilts. David Vaccaro then hit into a fielder’s choice, but a throwing error by the Rams shortstop made everyone safe, allowing Walter to come home and score. A double play would end the rally, however.
The Bonnies took their first lead of the day with another tally in the seventh – Ryan O’Connor doubled to right center with one out, moving to third on a ground out and scoring on a run-scoring single off the bat of Thad Johnson for a 3-2 score.
Unfortunately for the Bonnies, the lead would be very short lived.
Rhode Island responded with three runs in the home half of the seventh, with all the runs coming unearned.
The Rams added a run of insurance in the eighth.
Bona held a 10-7 margin in hits, led by two each from Johnson and Walter.
Brandon Schlimm (4-4) went seven innings on the hill, allowing two earned runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Ben Wessel (3-3) picked up the win for Rhode Island, scattering eight hits over seven innings while striking out three.
St. Bonaventure returns to action at Buffalo in a Tuesday doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
