ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The NCAA released Academic Progress Reports (APR) for all sports on Wednesday, with St. Bonaventure University showing great success nearly across the board for its 14 athletic programs.
Last week, six St. Bonaventure athletic programs earned recognition by ranking in the top 10 percent of their respective sports in APR – women’s basketball, men’s cross country, golf, women’s soccer, women’s tennis and softball all earned perfect 1000 APR scores.
In all, nine of St. Bonaventure’s 14 teams ranked above the national average for their respective sports – along with the previous six already recognized, men’s basketball (985), women’s cross country (993) and men’s soccer (993) all also were above the national averages. A total of seven St. Bonaventure teams saw their APR rise year-to-year: baseball, men’s soccer, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, women’s swimming and softball.
“With six teams ranking in the top 10 percent of their sports in APR scores, St. Bonaventure University gets to share a piece of the spotlight that the NCAA earns today with this announcement of improved graduation rates in Division I athletics,” said university president Sr. Margaret Carney. “We are very proud of the work of our players, coaches, and athletics staff to prioritize academic excellence as a hallmark of St. Bonaventure athletics.”
Women’s soccer and men’s cross country have been recognized for as part of the NCAA’s APR top 10 percent for three straight seasons, posting perfect scores each year. It is also the second consecutive year in a row that Bonnies women’s tennis has recorded a perfect APR.
The APR is calculated as follows:
- Each student-athlete receiving athletically related financial aid earns one point for staying in school and one point for being academically eligible.
- A team’s total points are divided by points possible and then multiplied by 1,000 to equal the team’s Academic Progress Rate.
- In addition to a team’s current-year APR, its rolling four-year APR is also used to determine accountability.
