NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The St. Bonaventure University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Little Three Rival Niagara on Tuesday afternoon, responding with a convincing win in the nightcap after dropping the first game of the day.
Bonaventure now stands 17-13-1 overall on the season while Niagara is 11-24-1.

The Purple Eagles never trailed and held on late to score a 5-3 game one victory.
Niagara tallied a run each in the first and second innings against St. Bonaventure starterDrew Teller to take control early.
The Bonnies tied the score in the third, however, when Aaron Phillips drilled his first career home run, a two-run shot, following a walk to Danny Urban.
The tie remained until the fourth when Niagara moved ahead on an RBI ground out from Julian Gallup. A run-scoring single from Greg Cullen then stretched the lead. The Purple Eagles would go on to tally another run in the bottom of the sixth.
Bona tried to rally in the seventh when Ryan O’Connor walked to lead off and Urban followed with a double. O’Connor scored on a sac fly from Jared Baldinelli, but Niagara reliever Matt McCuen closed the door without further damage.
Teller (3-1) went five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts. Niagara starter Jordan Parranto allowed just one hit – the Phillips home run – over his five innings.

Cole Peterson went 3-for-3 and Ben Contento picked up the win on the mound in his first start of the season as the Bonnies hammered out a doubleheader split.
Bona used some Niagara miscues to take control in the second inning, scoring seven times on the aid of just one hit for a 7-0 advantage.
Taishi Terashima walked with the bases loaded to force in the game’s first run. Another tally came home on a passed ball, then another on a fielder’s choice. The fourth and fifth runs came home on a fielding error by the pitcher and then a hit batter. Finally, Peterson brought two more runners home with a single to cap off the inning.
Contento allowed three runs on three hits in his 4.1 innings of work. Connor Grey threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two. Thad Johnson did not allow a base runner as he finished the game in the seventh.
The Bonnies return to Atlantic 10 play this weekend, traveling to Rhode Island for a three-game series beginning Friday.
