YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Norse starter Pat Kelley gave up just one run in 6.2 innings of work on Sunday, but a pair of eighth-inning runs from Youngstown State doomed the Northern Kentucky University baseball team as it fell 3-1 at Eastwood Field.
Kelley struck out a season-high six batters and gave up six hits. The sophomore right-hander allowed just four baserunners between the second and sixth innings.
The loss moves NKU to 14-21 overall and 4-11 in the Horizon League while the Penguins improve to 7-21 and 2-9 in League play.
YSU’s only run against Kelley came in the bottom of the first. The Penguins scored on an RBI single to right from Ryan Cordova for a 1-0 lead that stuck until the top of the sixth.
The Norse knotted the game at 1-1 in the sixth frame on a Brad Bohlen RBI single that plated Ty Amann for NKU’s lone run.
Two hits and an NKU error helped YSU score two in the bottom of the eighth. Web Charles clubbed a two-run single to lead YSU to the win and avoid the series sweep. The runs were tagged on Norse relievers Alex Bolia and Aric Harris with Harris’ run being unearned.
NKU’s six hits were split among five different players with Logan Spurlin going 2-for-5.
The Norse return to action when they host Xavier and Dayton for a pair of midweek games. NKU takes on the Musketeers Tuesday at 3 p.m. and the Flyers on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
NORSE NOTES:
- Tito Montgomery led NKU in the three-game set, going 6-for-13 with two runs scored and five RBI. Spurlin followed with a 5-for-14 showing and five RBI.
- Kelley has posted a 3.48 ERA in four starts against League opponents. He has tossed 20.2 innings with 10 runs, eight earned.
