CINCINNATI — Xavier University freshman guard Edmond Sumner has been named to the Kyle Macy Freshman All-America Team, which is sponsored by CollegeInsider.com. Sumner helped Xavier record a 28-6 overall record, including a 14-4 BIG EAST Conference record, which was good for second place behind eventual National Champion Villanova. XU, which made its 10th NCAA Tournament appearance in 11 years, earned a school-record final Associated Press Poll ranking of No. 9.
Sumner, a unanimous selection by league coaches to the BIG EAST Conference All-Freshman Team, was selected Second Team All-BIG EAST by CBS Sports and Bleacher Report. During the season, Sumner was named BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week five times. He earned the Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week in December, which was selected by CBS Sports in conjunction with the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.
Sumner finished second on the team in scoring at 11.0 ppg. as a freshman, which ranked 27th in the BIG EAST, and was second on the team in assists at 3.6 apg., which ranked 10th in the BIG EAST. He posted 22 double-figure scoring games this season.
Sumner is the third Musketeer that has won the award, joining Semaj Christon (2012-13) and Myles Davis (2013-14).
