ROCHESTER, NY – Anna “Bert” Silver, widow of the late Morrie Silver, the former President of the Rochester Red Wings and the man credited with saving professional baseball in Rochester in the 1950s, passed away early Saturday morning. She was 98.
“This is a sad day for Rochester Community Baseball,” Red Wings General Manager Dan Mason said. “Mrs. Silver was the matriarch of our organization and a true pioneer in our industry as one of the first women in a leadership position for a baseball team.”
“In addition to her immense love for our ball club, she had a great passion for our community and like her husband was kind and generous to many organizations in our town. Thankfully her legacy and that of her husband is carried out daily by her daughter and grandkids. We’re all here to make a difference in people’s lives and her impact will be felt for many years to come.”
Born November 30, 1917, she married Morrie in 1956. After becoming a widow in 1974, Mrs. Silver spent the remainder of her life devoted to her late husband’s desire for the continuing success of the baseball team. She was a member of the Board of Directors from 1975-90 including Chairperson from 1981-90. Mrs. Silver was unparalleled in her devotion to keeping the Red Wings a viable asset in Rochester and in maintaining an affordable family atmosphere at baseball games. She placed a high corporate priority on making the Red Wings a positive influence in the community as a whole, striving always for a professional and wholesome environment.
She is survived by her daughter, current President/CEO/COO of the Red Wings, Naomi, grandson Morrie (18) and granddaughter Desirée (14).
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 5 at 1 p.m. in the sanctuary of Temple B’rith Kodesh (2131 Elmwood Ave, Rochester, NY 14618). Interment will be held privately. The family will receive friends at Irondequoit Country Club (4045 East Ave, Rochester, NY 14618) on Tuesday, April 5 from 2-7 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Red Wings Community Foundation (One Morrie Silver Way, Rochester, NY 14608) or School of the Holy Childhood (100 Groton Parkway, Rochester, NY 14623 ) in her memory.
