The National Association of Basketball Coaches today announced that St. Bonaventure coach Mark Schmidt is its 2015-16 District 4 Coach of the Year, and sophomore point guard Jaylen Adams and senior guard Marcus Posley were both selected to the second team All-District 4. The awards are selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC.
District 4 includes the Atlantic 10 Conference member schools.
In his ninth season at St. Bonaventure, Schmidt guided the Bonnies to a share of the regular season Atlantic 10 Conference championship, the first in the program’s history, and a berth in the National Invitation Tournament. St. Bonaventure set a school record for A-10 wins, finishing 14-4 in conference play. The Bonnies were predicted to finish eighth in the preseason A-10 poll. St. Bonaventure ended 22-9 overall, tied for the most wins in a regular season in the program’s 96-year history.
Earlier this month, Schmidt was named the A-10 Coach of the Year.
Adams enjoyed a breakout sophomore season in large part due to his development as one of the A-10’s premier shooters. A first team All-Conference selection, he tied for eighth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 17.9 points per game. The Baltimore, Md., native ranked second in the A-10 in three-point field goal percentage (.438) and fourth in free throw percentage (.874). He stood fifth among A-10 players in three-pointers made per game (84 total, 2.8 per game) and third in assists (5.0 per game). In addition to being consistent all year with 26 games scoring in double figures, Adams was at his best in pivotal games. He scored a career high 31 points in a road win at Saint Joseph’s, then matched that in a win at Dayton.
Adams is the first St. Bonaventure player to earn first team All-Conference and NABC All-District honors in the same season since Andrew Nicholson in 2012.
Posley joined Adams to form one of the most dynamic and productive backcourts in the game. The second-leading scorer in the Atlantic 10 at 19.6 points per game, Posley had 19 games of 19 or more points including five 30-point games and a 47-point outburst in the March 2 win over Saint Joseph’s. He made 82 three-pointers to rank sixth in the A-10 in three-pointers per game (2.6). Posley, who was named to the A-10’s All-Conference second team, also averaged 3.6 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. The Rockford, Ill., native scored 1,122 points over just two seasons with the Bonnies.
