BROOKLYN — Rex Pflueger’s only basket proved the difference as No. 6-seed Notre Dame defeated NCAA Tournament darlings No. 14-seed S.F. Austin, 76-75 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament East Region.
Pflueger tapped in Zach Auguste’s putback attempt with 1.5 seconds remaining in the game as Notre Dame advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the second straight year.
Auguste converted twice coming out of the locker as Notre Dame extended a one-point halftime edge. The senior forward took an over the top lob from Demetrius Jackson on the half’s first possession and finished at the rim. His layup on the break made it 46-41.
But S.F. Austin rallied three points at a time.
Thomas Walkup drove in traffic from the foul line and finished with contact and finished the three-point play. Demetrious Floyd followed with back-to-back triples to tie the game 64 with 6:58 remaining.
