CINCINNATI — Xavier University swept the BIG EAST Conference major men’s basketball weekly honors with sophomore Trevon Bluiett being named BIG EAST Player of the Week and Edmond Sumner being named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. The duo helped the Musketeers to wins over Providence and at Georgetown last week.
Bluiett averaged 18.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in the two Xavier victories, including a game-high 23 points and six rebounds in the Providence win. He followed that with 13 points and five rebounds at Georgetown. For the season, Bluiett leads the Musketeers in scoring at 15.3 ppg., which ranks eighth in the BIG EAST. This is the second time that Bluiett has earned Player of the Week honors and the seventh time he has been honored by the BIG EAST this season. He has been on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll five times in addition to the two Player of the Week honors.
Sumner was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the fifth time this season. Sumner averaged 16.5 points and did not commit a turnover in XU’s 2-0 week. For the two games, Sumner shot 71.4 percent from the floor and was 11-of-11 from the free throw line. Sumner, who scored a career-high 22 points in the win at Georgetown, is second on the team in scoring at 11.4 ppg.
No. 5 Xavier, 24-3 overall and 12-3 in the BIG EAST, hosts No. 1 Villanova, 24-3 and 13-1, on Wednesday night at Cintas Center on FS1.
