CINCINNATI — Xavier University freshman guard Edmond Sumner has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for a fourth time this season after averaging 15.0 points, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals in Xavier’s wins over St. John’s on Feb. 3 and Marquette on Feb. 6, including 20 points (one shy of his career high) to go with five assists in the Marquette win on Feb. 6.
Sumner is third on the team in scoring at 10.9 ppg. (28th in the BIG EAST) and is second on the team in assists at 3.4 apg. (12th in the BIG EAST).
In addition, sophomore guard Trevon Bluiett earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this week for a fifth time this season after averaging 19.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in wins over St. John’s and Marquette this past week, including 23 points (one shy of his career high) and a career-high eight assists in the Marquette win on Feb. 6. This is the sixth BIG EAST honor this season for Bluiett, who was named the BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week on Jan. 18.
Bluiett leads Xavier in scoring at 15.7 ppg. (eighth in the BIG EAST Conference), 3-point field goals made (third in the BIG EAST at 2.4 mpg.) and 3-point field goal percentage (fourth in the BIG EAST at .407). Bluiett is second on the team in rebounding at 6.8 rpg. (11th in the BIG EAST) and is third on the team and 11th in the BIG EAST in free-throw percentage at 80.4 percent.
Xavier, 21-2 overall and 9-2 in the BIG EAST Conference, visits Creighton, 15-9 overall and 6-5 in the BIG EAST, on Tuesday night.
