CINCINNATI —Xavier University sophomore Trevon Bluiett has been named BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week and teammate Edmond Sumner has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.
This is the fifth time Bluiett has earned a weekly BIG EAST honor this season, having been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll four times this season. For Sumner, this is the third time he has been selected as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. In fact, he picked up where he left off before his Dec. 31 injury because Sumner won the award two straight weeks at the end of December.
Bluiett led Xavier in scoring in a pair of wins, while averaging 21.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals for the week. Bluiett scored a career-high 24 points, including a career-high tying five 3-pointers, in the win over DePaul on Jan. 12. In the win at Marquette on Jan. 16, Bluiett scored a team-high 18 points. For the season, Bluiett is seventh in the BIG EAST in scoring at 15.3 ppg. and is second in the BIG EAST in 3-point field goals at 2.4 per game. He has reached double figures in scoring in 16 of Xavier’s 17 games this season.
Sumner, playing his first game since an injury suffered in a fall at Villanova on Dec. 31, had 15 points, five assists and three rebounds in Saturday’s victory at Marquette. Sumner shot 4-of-8 from the field. For the season, Sumner is the Musketeers’ second leading scorer at 11.3 ppg., which ranks 25th in the BIG EAST.
