CINCINNATI — Xavier University seventh-year head coach Chris Mack has been selected by Sporting News as its midseason pick for National Coach of the Year. Xavier, which was picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Conference preseason poll, stands 14-1 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST Conference entering its game tonight against DePaul.
Xavier’s 14-1 record marks the best record in Xavier history after 15 games. The Musketeers are ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press Poll and No. 8 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, while holding down the No. 1 spot in the NCAA Official Men’s Basketball RPI.
The Sedler Family Men’s Head Basketball Coach has recorded a 148-72 (.673) mark as the Xavier head coach and stands tied for second on Xavier’s all-time wins list with Skip Prosser. He has led Xavier to the NCAA Tournament in five of his first six seasons at the helm, including the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in 2010, 2012 and 2015. He is the only Xavier head coach that has led XU to three Sweet 16s.
Mack was selected as the 2010-11 Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year by his fellow A-10 coaches. In addition, Mack was the recipient of the 2011 Skip Prosser Man of the Year award, which is sponsored by CollegeInsider.com. The Skip Prosser Award was established in 2008 to honor those who not only achieve success on the basketball court but who display moral integrity off of it as well. He was the 2009-10 Basketball Times Rookie Coach of the Year.
