ST. LOUIS (USBWA) – The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has selected the Providence guard Kris Dunn as its Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week for games ending the week of Sunday, Jan. 3. The USBWA’s weekly honor is presented by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook.
As the Big East Conference Player of the Week, Dunn was nominated for the weekly award, which was chosen by a representative of the USBWA board of directors from a list of Division I conference players of the week. This is the seventh season that the USBWA has selected a national player of the week.
Dunn, a 6-4 junior from New London, Conn., helped the Friars post a 2-0 mark last week as he averaged 23.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 2.5 steals in conference wins over Butler and St. John’s. Dunn scored 20 points, registered nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds in an 81-73 win at Butler on Dec. 31. On Jan. 2, he scored 26 points, recorded nine rebounds, registered six assists and made three steals in the 83-65 victory over St. John’s.
Maryland’s Stone named Wayman Tisdale National Freshman of the Week.
In the two wins, Dunn was 15-29 (.517) from the field, including 6-10 from three-point territory. He leads the Big East in assists (7.3) and steals (3.1) and is second in the league in scoring (17.5 ppg). He is the only player in the nation in the top 10 in steals (2nd) and assists (6th).
