OLEAN, N.Y. — Loyola University Maryland had its best shooting game of the season, and all five scorers tallied 11 or more, but Saint Bonaventure University shot slightly better from the field and took 16 more free throws in a 94-82 non-conference win Saturday night at the Reilly Center.
Loyola (1-3) shot 52.5 percent (32 of 61) from the field and 52.4 percent (11 of 21) from 3-point range, but the Bonnies (2-1) made 55.6 percent of their shots and had a 26 to seven advantage in made free throws.
A 15-3 Bonnies run late in the first half padded Saint Bonaventure’s lead to 17, 47-30, and the Bonnies stretched their advantage to 19, 57-38, 3:09 into the second half on a traditional 3-point play by Jaylen Adams.
The Greyhounds, however, slowly chipped away at the Bonnies’ lead, cutting it to 10, 62-52, on an Eric Laster tip in with 12:28 to go.
Two Andre Walker free throws at 9:28 made it a 67-61 Saint Bonaventure lead, and the Greyhounds forced a turnover on the Bonnies’ offensive end.
Tyler Hubbard missed the front end of one-and-one at the free-throw line for Loyola, however, and Saint Bonaventure scored the next five points to take an 11-point lead, 72-61, with 8:14.
Laster would get the deficit back under 10 twice with a three at 7:45 and a jumper at 7:05. Jarred Jones then cut the lead to nine, 78-69, with a layup at 5:38, but Adams would hit a three on the Saint Bonaventure end, and the Bonnies led by double digits the rest of the way.
Hubbard kept the Greyhounds within range early in the game, hitting six first-half threes. He finished 21 points, hitting a career-high seven from behind the arc.
Walker finished with 14 points, while Laster and Jones each finished with 12 points, combining for 22 in the second half. Franz Rassman tallied 11, and he matched Jones’ six rebounds for team-high honors.
Marcus Posley made 7 of 11 field goals and all 10 of his free throws to score a game-high 26 points, while Dion Wright finished with a double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds. Adams added 16, and Nelson Kaputo scored 11 for the Bonnies.
Loyola returns to Reitz Arena for a pre-Thanksgiving tilt on Tuesday, Nov. 24, against Stony Brook University at 7 p.m.
