Counting down to tipoff and previewing the incoming players of the Atlantic 10 with a look at the first-year players of the Rhode Island Rams.
The Rams finished 14-18 (5-11 A10) and lost to UMass in the second round of the 2014 A-10 tournament. Danny Hurley and his staff welcome three players to campus: Jarvis Garrett, Jared Terrell and Earl Watson.
Jarvis Garrett Fr. G 6-0, 170 Milwaukee, WI/ Notre Dame Prep
Highly touted point guard averaged 24.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists, and 3.0 steals per game for head coach Ryan Hurd at Notre Dame Prep in Fitchburg, Mass. Played the last two seasons for the Crusaders and is one of five players from the school to commit to an NCAA Division I program this season. A three-star recruit according to Rivals.com and 247Sports.com, was among top point guard recruits in the country during the late signing period. Spent his first two prep seasons at West Allis H.S. outside of Milwaukee. Played with the TP (Terry Porter) Elite AAU program.
What they’re saying about Jarvis Garrett – Steve Keller/ National Recruiting Report: “He may be the best point guard coming into the A-10. He’s quick, can handle, can score. He can really run a team. He has a second gear coming up the court. They got themselves a really good point guard.”
Ward Jenkins/ Milwaukee Running Rebels: “He’s a tough, little point guard. He doesn’t make a lot of mistakes, has a good pull-up. Good defender and a good leader.”
Jared Terrell Fr. G 6-3, 220 Weymouth, MA/ Brewster Academy
Ranked as one of the top prospects in America. Rated as the No. 64 overall prospect according to 247Sports.com, 66th on Rivals.com, 78th on Scout.com, and 79th according to ESPN100. Completed his prep career at Brewster Academy, averaging 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game on a team with seven NCAA Division I signees. Helped Brewster and head coach Jason Smith win the NEPSAC AAA and the National Prep School Championships in March, 2014. Was named the NPSC’s Most Valuable Player. On the AAU circuit, Terrell starred for head coach Ty Boswell and the Expressions Elite program, part of Nike Grassroots Basketball and Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL). Played in the Jordan Brand Regional game at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and had 11 points, two boards, two assists, and three steals in 18 minutes of play.
What they’re saying about Jared Terrell – Steve Keller/ National Recruiting Report: “He may be the best two-guard coming into the league. He is athletic and physical. He just gets out there and plays ball.”
Allen Rubin/ Hoop Scoop: “He’s very good, very strong. He’s athletic and a good outside shooter. Puts it on the floor and overpowers opposing guards. Once he gets to the rim, he finishes really well.”
James Lee/ Mid Atlantic Select: “He’s big, strong, physical, athletic guard. He creates space with his body and can score from multiple spots. He’s a physical defender. He will be an impact player at Rhode Island, probably should be a starter. He has the potential to be an all-league player early on in his career.”
Earl Watson Jr. C 6-7, 255 Fort Pierce, FL/ Chipola College
Played two seasons at Chipola College in Marianna, Fla. from 2011-13. Averaged 9.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks, connecting on 54.0% of his shots from the floor during the 2012-13 season. Posted four double doubles in scoring and rebounding. Earned the start in 17 of 29 games for head coach Patrick Blake’s squad that went 26-5 overall and finished second in the Panhandle Conference with an 8-4 mark. As a freshman with the Indians, Watson averaged 6.5 points and 5.3 rebounds while making 57% of his field goal attempts. Originally inked a National Letter of Intent to attend Wichita State. Finished his prep career at Queen City Prep Academy in Charlotte, N.C. after attending Fort Pierce (Fla.) Central.
