A night after erasing their largest deficit of the year to win a game, the Red Wings relinquished their largest lead of the season to lose a tight one, 5-3, Friday night against the Buffalo Bisons.

Leading 3-0 in the seventh inning, Wings starter Kris Johnson yielded a three-run homer to Jonathan Diaz to tie the game. The bullpen then walked in a pair of runs in the eighth sending Rochester to their first series opening loss since May 9.

The Wings (41-33) had won their previous nine openers.

Buffalo also erased a three-run deficit to beat the Wings on April 6 at Frontier Field. The Wings are 0-3 against the Bisons this season.

Chris Colabello’s second homer as a Red Wing this season gave Rochester a 2-0 lead in the second. An inning later, Chris Herrmann plated Doug Bernier from third staking the Wings to a 3-0 lead.

However, the Wings would only muster two hits the rest of the game. Bernier (2-for-4) was the only Wing to notch multiple hits on the night.

In the decisive eighth inning, Ryan Pressly and A.J. Achter combined to allow just one hit but the duo walked four in the frame as each issued a bases loaded free pass. Pressly (0-3) suffered the loss – his second in the last six games.

The Wings walked a nine-inning tied for season high seven hitters on Friday.

Johnson turned in a quality start allowing three runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings.

The Wings and Bisons play a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch of Game One slated for 5:35 p.m. The Wings will send RHP Trevor May to the mound in the opener and southpaw Scott Diamond in the nightcap.

WINGS THINGS: The homer for Jonathan Diaz was his first of the season and just the 15th of his career…The last series opener the Wings lost came on May 9 at Toledo (7-2)…Despite the loss, the Wings are still 9-5 over their last 14 road games since losing eight straight May 5-12.
