GENEVA, N.Y. — The Geneva Twins won their 10th game of the New York Collegiate Baseball League season as they downed the Olean Oilers by a score of 5-2 at McDonough Park, Saturday evening. After dropping the first game to the Oilers in Olean on Friday night, the Twins rebounded scoring five runs in the final four innings to come away with the victory.
The Oilers opened up the scoring early against the Twins starter Connor Faix (Case Western Reserve). After getting two quick outs in the second inning, James Ott (Bloomsburg) singled up the middle and reached second on a throwing error by the second basemen. Mike Fahrman (Florida) capitalized with an RBI single which gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead.
Olean loaded the bases in the third fourth and fifth but were unable to capitalize in any of those innings as both Connor Faix and reliever John Nargoski (Iona) came through in clutch situations for the Twins.
It was Geneva who struck next and they scored big in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brett Connors (Siena) singled to lead off the sixth inning. He then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Janson Bourque (LSU at Eunice). Tre Edwards (Murray State) then singled up the middle to plate Connors to tie the game at 1. But the Twins were not done. Geneva then loaded the bases for Calvin Woolhiser (St. John Fisher) who reached base as he grounded into a fielder’s choice to the third basemen. Ott tried to cut off Edwards at the plate, but the throw hit Edwards as he crossed the plate with the go ahead run for the Twins. With the bases still loaded the next batter, Jason Ibrahim (Arkansas Pine Bluff) then drew a walk to score the Twins third run of the inning.
Olean responded in the top of the seventh with a run of their own. Ryan Kolhofer (Defiance) reached second base on an error by the third baseman. Mark Lepri (Aquinas) then singled in Kolhofer and closed the gap to 3-2.
But the Twins added two more runs in the seventh and the eighth innings. DJ Link (Harvard) was responsible for both of those runs. Link reached on an infield single in the seventh and came around to score on a passed ball in the seventh. He then added an insurance run in the eighth by driving in Mike Annone (Wilmington) in the eighth putting Geneva up 5-2.
Robert Winemiller (Case Western Reserve) inherited two runners in the top of the eighth but was able to nail down the five out save as the Twins emerged victorious and earned their tenth win on the season. That moves them into a tie for second place with the Rochester Ridgemen. The Oilers drop to 4-11 after the loss to the Twins.
The winning pitcher is John Nargoski who earned his first win of the season after he relieved Faix in the fifth. The loss goes to Alex Lopez, who pitched a stellar game through five innings, but ran into trouble the third time through the Twins lineup.
The Twins (10-7) and Oilers (4-11) are back in action tomorrow afternoon at McDonough Park. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
