Power snaps skid; splits with Twins

NIAGARA, N.Y. — Blake Hohlbein (Huntington) tossed six shutout innings, and the Niagara offense scored three in the sixth as the Power upended the Geneva Twins, 3-0 in the nightcap of a doubleheader in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Sal Maglie Stadium, Wednesday.

Hohlbein struck out one, walked one and scattered five hits for his second win of the season.

Ivan Acuna (Catawba Valley CC) led the bottom of the Power sixth with a single. Jack Trotman (UMass-Lowell) reached on an error. The next batter Hunter Bingham(William Jewell College) laid down a bunt, but Geneva pitcher Jake Shields (Case Western) fielded it cleanly threw too third base for the  force out on Acuna.

With runners on first and second, Caleb Lang (Philadelphia Biblical) stepped into the box and hit an RBI double plating Trotman for a 1-0 Power lead.

A.J Hammond (Millersville) greeted Jonah van Bemmelen (Arcadia) who hit a two-run RBI single.

Bemmelen went onto strike out the side.

Zach Verner (John Carroll) worked a scoreless inning for his sixth save of the season. The Power closer retired the first two he faced with a strike out and fly ball. After loading the bases allowing a hit and a pair of walks, Verner fanned Sean Feeney (Wilmington) to end the game.

Feeney had two hits and three RBI while David Anderson (Muhlenberg) hurled four scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the win as Geneva downed Niagara, 9-2 in the opener.

Mike Annone (Wilmington) and Zach Goldstein (So. New Hampshire) rapped back-to-back RBI doubles in a four-run first as Geneva grabbed a 4-0 lead and never looked back.

Feeney tripled home a run in the sixth and plated two in the seventh for the Twins.

Anderson struck out one, walked two and allowed one hit.

Matt Klena (Penn St. Greater Allegheny) tossed two scoreless innings for Geneva (8-6).

The Twins Tre Edwards (Murray State College) collected four hits on the night.

Hammond had three hits for Niagara (9-6).

The same two teams meet again Thursday night. A 7 p.m. first pitch is scheduled.
