Chris Colabello’s three hits and two RBI paced the Red Wings offense in a 7-4 win over the Gwinnett Braves in the series finale Tuesday night at Coolray Field.
The Wings’ victory combined with Syracuse’s loss to Buffalo moves Rochester back into a tie for first place in the IL North.
The Red Wings (37-28) finished 6-3 on their nine-game southern swing as they salvaged a four-game split with Gwinnett. The Wings haven’t lost a series since being swept in a four-game set at Toledo, May 9-12 – a span of seven series.
Colabello – who finished 3-for-5 with two doubles – was in the middle of each of the first three Wings’ rallies on Tuesday.
The Wings’ first baseman doubled to lead off the second inning and scored on a two-out RBI single from Chris Rahl that gave the Wings a 1-0 lead.
Pedro Florimon extended the Wings lead to 2-0 with a solo home run leading off the third inning. Both of Florimon’s home runs this season have now come against Gwinnett starter Daniel Rodriguez (4-7).
Rochester would tack on three more runs in the inning courtesy of an RBI single from Colabello and a sacrifice fly from Wilkin Ramirez that resulted in two runs. G-Braves centerfielder, Tyler Pastornicky, made the catch on Ramirez’s deep fly but threw errantly back into the infield allowing Deibinson Romero to score from second.
Ramirez extended his career-long hit streak to 12 games with a base hit in the eighth inning. Over the streak – the second longest by a Red Wing this season – Ramirez is hitting .333 (16-for-48) with 10 RBI.
Colabello knocked in the Wings’ sixth run of the game with an RBI double in the fifth inning scoring James Beresford who doubled to lead off the frame.
Trevor May (6-4) earned his fifth win in his last six starts as he allowed three runs on six hits and three walks over 5 1/3 innings.
The combination of Ryan Pressly, Aaron Thompson and Michael Tonkin combined to allow just one run over the final 3 2/3 innings to lock down the win.
The Red Wings return to Frontier Field on Thursday night to open an eight-game homestand against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. RHP Yohan Pino (8-1, 2.17) will make the start in the series opener for Rochester.
WINGS THINGS: The series finale got underway after a 1-hour and 37-minute delay…The Wings hit 10 home runs over the 9-game trip after hitting just 9 over the first 25 road games of the season…James Beresford (2-for-5) extended his hitting streak to a season-high 8 games over which he’s hitting .364 (12-for-33)…Over his last six starts, Trevor May is 5-1 with a 1.45 ERA (6 ER/37.1 IP).
