ROCHESTER, NY (Monday, June 2) – Red Wings right-hander Trevor May was tabbed the International League Pitcher of the Week (May 26-June 1), the league announced on Monday. Over a pair of starts last week, May went 2-0 without allowing an earned run over 12 innings of work, earning victories over Syracuse (Monday) and Gwinnett (Saturday).
Over his last four starts — all of which have come at Frontier Field – May is 4-0 and hasn’t allowed an earned run. The 26-inning streak without yielding an earned run has dropped his ERA from 4.97 on May 7 to 2.62 – 7th best in the IL. Over the 4-game win streak, he’s allowed just one run on 16 hits and 11 walks while striking out 19.
The league is batting just .196 (39-199) off the Twins 8th ranked prospect – the 2nd-best mark in the IL this season behind only his teammate Yohan Pino (.180). May’s allowed five or fewer hits in nine of his 10 starts this season.
May, 24, was a 4th round selection of the Phillies in 2008. In 2011 he was Philadelphia’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year, and each of the past two seasons he led the Double-A Eastern League in strikeouts. The Longview, Wash. native was traded to Minnesota prior to the 2013 season as part of the deal for Ben Revere.
May is the first Red Wings player to be honored with a weekly award from the league this season. Last season, LHP Pat Dean (Aug.5-11) and RHP Vance Worley (Jun. 17-23) took home IL Pitcher of the Week honors for Rochester.
The 6-5, 240-pounder is next scheduled to pitch on Thursday (June 5) against the Charlotte Knights at brand-new BB&T Ballpark in Uptown Charlotte.
The Red Wings wrap up their eight-game homestand tonight looking for a series sweep of the Gwinnett Braves. RHP Alex Meyer will make his 11th start of the season for Rochester with first pitch from Frontier Field scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
