DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton Flyers women’s basketball team won its Atlantic 10 home opener with a 73-59 victory over the St. Bonaventure Bonnies Saturday afternoon at UD Arena. The Flyers improved their record to 9-4 and 2-0 in the A-10 while SBU dropped to 12-6 and 1-2 in A-10 play.
The win marked the 19 consecutive for the Flyers at UD Arena, dating back to Feb. 11, 2012 when the A-10 Regular Season Champion Bonnies defeated UD 56-55. In the same season, Dayton returned the favor with a 56-55 win over St. Bonaventure in the A-10 Tournament title game on March 5, 2012.The Flyers’ 19 consecutive home win streak is tied for fifth-best in the NCAA.
Freshman Celeste Edwards scored a career-high 14 points, including 11 points in the second half, as five Flyers scored in double figures. Junior Andrea Hoover scored 13 and hauled in eight rebounds while junior Ally Malott added a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomores Amber Deane and Kelley Austria scored 11 points each for UD.
Dayton trailed 35-31 with 2:24 remaining in the first half after Katie Healy converted a three-point play for the Bonnies. The Flyers then went on a 25-0 run until St. Bonaventure finally broke the drought after a basket by Healy with 10:37 left in the game. The Bonnies went on a scoreless drought of 11 minutes and 47 seconds as Dayton turned a four-point deficit into a 21-point lead (56-35).
The Flyers’ defense held St. Bonaventure to 36 percent (20-of-55) from the field, including a 24.1 percent (7-of-29) clip in the second half. UD shot 39 percent (23-of-59) from the field, including 43 percent (9-of-21) from beyond the arc.
Dayton tied a season-low in turnovers with 13 while forcing the Bonnies into 15 turnovers. UD also dominated in fast break points 21-4 and had an 18-6 edge in bench points.
The Flyers are back in action on Thursday, Jan. 16 as they take on the George Washington Colonials. Tip-off from UD Arena is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET and will be broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network.
