One game does not equate swagger, but it can indicate an adjustment in body language.
And that is what is happened at Rose Hill Gymnasium, Friday night.
Fordham’s 87-67 opening night triumph over St. Francis, Pa. was just that – one win in November.
But there was a slight difference to the Rams. They dictated tempo. They dictated flow.
A team which has been relegated in recent years to taking what an opponent offers was taking what they wanted.
Freshman Jon Severe showed Friday night that he can take what he deserves. The NYS High School Player of the Year set a program record for freshmen in their first game scoring 28. He hit 9-of-15 from the field and 7-of-10 behind the arc. One trey in particular showed it all. Left open five feet behind the arc, Severe didn’t think twice about drilling a shot. It was an if-you-are-going-to-leave-me-I-am-going-to-make-it-hurt shot.
I believe they call that chutzpah.
Or is it “onions?”
Call it what you like, those are terms not freely associated with Fordham basketball. Not at least in recent memory.
It was just one game in November. The Rams will more than likely come down to earth when they visit Syracuse on Tuesday night. Meaningful change takes time. Something Fordham and Severe have.
