Counting down to tipoff and previewing the Atlantic 10’s incoming freshmen with a look at the first year players of the St. Joseph’s University Hawks.
St. Joseph’s won 18 contests (eight in the A10) in 2012-13. Phil Martelli welcomes two freshmen: DeAndre Bembry, Jai Williams. Javon Baumann and Kyle Molock will also get on the court after redshirting last year.
DeAndre Bembry F 6-6. 195 Charlotte, NC/ The Patrick School-N.J.
New Jersey All-State First Team selection in 2013… Named the 2013 Union County Player of the Year… Averaged 21.8 points per game, which was the 17th best total in the state, while grabbing 9.0 rebounds… Tallied over 1,000 points in his career… Team won the Union County Tournament and reached the state Non-Public B championship game… All-Union County First Team honoree… Averaged 18.2 points as a junior… Nominee for 2013 McDonald’s All-American Team… Participated in the 2013 Jordan Brand Classic
What they’re saying about DeAndre Bembry – Allen Rubin/ Hoop Scoop: “He’s a very good wing forward, good shooter. He puts it on the floor and gets to the rim. He plays very good defense. Tough kid. He should probably start this year.”
Jay Gomes/NJ Hoops: “Great motor. Plays hard on both ends. Will be hard to keep off the floor. Excellent athlete. Gets to the rim and finishes in transition. Also needs to add strength to fulfill vast potential. Averaged 21.8 ppg and was ranked among NJ Hoops top 10 seniors in the class.”
Jamie Shaw/Phenom Hoop Report: “Bembry is an ultimate team guy, can really hit you from multiple areas not only on offense but defense too. His defensive versatility is something that separates him from the pack, with an ability to guard multiple positions both on and off the ball. On offense Bembry can knock down a jump shot, but his length and athleticism make him best in transition and attacking the rim.”
Steve Keller/ National Recruiting Report: “He may well be the second-best shooter coming into the league. He has good size and can really score. He’s a three-man, big and athletic. He just drills threes. He has a chance to be an all-league player. St. Joe’s got themselves a good one there.”
Jai Williams F 6-9, 275 Philadelphia, PA/ Philadelphia Electrical & Technical Charter
Two-time All-Public League selection, earning third-team honors as a senior… Team went 16-12 in 2013 and reached the Class A Quarterfinals… Averaged 10.2 points as a senior, but missed nine games with injuries… Scored 670 career points… Averaged 10.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.7 blocks as a junior… Nominee for 2013 McDonald’s All-American Team.
What they’re saying about Jai Williams – Allen Rubin/ Hoop Scoop: “He’s a big-body kid, strictly an inside player and a good rebounder. He’s been injury prone.”
Steve Keller/ National Recruiting Report: “He’s good. He’s got size and a good body. He has a chance to be good in the league in a year or two.”
Javon Baumann (redshirt) C 6-8, 254 Solms-Oberbiel, Germany/ Theodor-Heus School
Played for the Licher Baeren team in Germany’s Pro-B League… Averaged 4.7 points and 3.8 rebounds in 19 games played in 2011-12, while shooting 62.7 percent from the field… Attended Theodor-Heus School in Wetzlar, Germany.
What they’re saying about Javon Baumann – Allen Rubin/Hoop Scoop: “He’s a good inside player. He should get back-up minutes this year. He scores inside and is a good rebounder.”
Kyle Molock (redshirt) G 6-2, 190 Dublin, OH/ Dublin Coffman
Redshirted the season after re-tearing the ACL in his right knee during summer workouts in 2012… Has four years of eligibility with the Hawks. Battled two knee injuries which shortened his high school career… Was averaging 19.0 points through eight games as a senior at Dublin Coffman when he tore the ACL in his right knee on January 3, 2012… In July of 2010, suffered a severe injury to all of the major ligaments in his left knee, causing him to miss his junior year… Scored 14.0 points per game as a sophomore and was ranked as Ohio’s best point guard in the Class of 2012… Grew up in Wilmington, Del.
What they’re saying about Kyle Molock – Chris Johnson/Hoop Scoop: “He’s a pretty good athlete. He’s an athletic point guard who can score and very good at getting to the cup. He plays great defense. He’ll really dig into a ballhandler. If he can get that knee back to 100 percent then St. Joe’s has got a nice steal with Kyle.”
Steve Keller/The National Recruiting Report: “He’s a good-sized point guard. He’s a pretty good get. He’s good enough to run the show for St. Joe’s.”
