Counting down to tipoff and previewing the incoming freshmen of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with a look at the first year players of the Fairfield Stags.
Fairfield finished 19-16 (nine wins in the MAAC) a year ago. Sydney Johnson welcomes four newcomers to Bridgeport: Doug Chappell, Lincoln Davis, K.J. Rose and Steve Smith.
Doug Chappell G 6-2, 175 Alexandria, VA/ Episcopal
Doug Chappell comes to Fairfield University via Episcopal High School where he averaged just over 14 points per game in his senior season and also posted an assist and a rebound per outing. He tallied 20 or more points in five games as a senior, including a season-high 27 points against Benedictine. He followed up that game with a 24-point effort in the season finale. He capped his senior season at Episcopal by earning the William Caskie Watts Award for Most Valuable Player for basketball.
What they’re saying about Doug Chappell – Edgar Walker/ DMV Elite: “He’s a good shot maker. He can really shoot it, but he can play the one when he needs to. He has good floor presence. I’ve been impressed with his ability to score. He can lock down defensively at times. He moves really well laterally.”
Jamie Shaw/Phenom Hoop Report: “Chappell is a quick and athletic scoring guard. A volume guy in the sense he scores and he likes the ball in his hands. When he is rolling, he is able to get by his man and get into the lane or knock down the jump shot to deep range. Chappell needs to tighten his shot selection but has ability to score.”
James Lee/ Mid Atlantic Select: “He’s a strong, physical guard, a very good three-point shooter. He has the capability of being a good defender once he learns the college game.”
Steve Keller/ National Recruiting Report: “He is an off guard with the ability to shoot.”
Lincoln Davis G 6-3, 170 Pittsburgh, PA/ New Hampton School
Lincoln Davis was a standout student-athlete at Central Catholic High School where he helped the team post a 16-12 record in 2011-12. During that season, Davis averaged 19 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. He scored 20 or more points in 11 games which included two games of 30-plus points. The guard tallied 31 points in the championship game of the KSA tournament against Fairview but would later surpass that total with 33 points versus North Allegheny. He was also good with handling the ball during that campaign, posting 1.9 assists and 2.3 steals per game. He scored his 1000th career point in February of 2012, hitting the mark against North Catholic. Davis went to the New Hampton School for the 2012-13 academic year and played basketball. He helped the team advance to postseason and finished the year with an 18-point scoring average.
What they’re saying about Lincoln Davis: Steve Keller/ National Recruiting Report: “He may be the best kid in Fairfield’s group. He’s athletic, gets up and down. He has pretty good size. He had a good senior year in high school before going to prep school. He should have a pretty good year.”
K.J. Rose G 6-1, 190 Binghamton, N.Y./ Binghamton
K.J. Rose will join the Fairfield University basketball program for the 2013-14 season. The guard enjoyed a highly-successful career at Binghamton High School. Over the two seasons, Rose helped lead his team to two Section 4 Class AA Championships. In 2012-13, Rose averaged 16 points per game as the Patriots went to the New York State Regional semi-finals before losing to New Rochelle. As a junior, Rose was selected as the best player in Class AA by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.
What they’re saying about K.J. Rose: Steve Keller/ National Recruiting Report: “He is a decent point guard.”
Steve Smith F 6-8, 190 Gwynedd Calley, PA/ La Salle College High
Steve Smith attended LaSalle College High School where he was a three-year starter for the Explorers. The forward was one of the program’s top three-point shooters during his career. Smith set a school record for three-point field goals in a game, hitting seven against Cardinal O’Hara to finish with 25 points. He was among the team’s top scorers as a senior, spending most of the year in double figures. He has ability to score from anywhere on the floor and looks to be one of the Stags’ top outside shooters. As a junior, Smith averaged 7.8 points per game as one of the top scorers for the Explorers.
What they’re saying about Steve Smith: Steve Keller/ National Recruiting Report: “He can shoot. He’s continued to improved as time has gone on.”
Allen Rubin/ Hoop Scoop: “He is a face-up four. His strength is outside shooting. He is a very good three-point shooter. He is a catch-and-shoot kid.”
