NIAGARA FALLS, NY — The Hornell Dodgers scored seven runs in the first en route to a 16-2 victory over the Niagara Power in their New York Collegiate Baseball League regular season finale at Sal Maglie Stadium. The victory along with two Olean losses to the Geneva Red Wings propelled the Dodgers into the #2 seed for the NYCBL postseason.
Ten different Dodgers collected hits, including two pitchers, and five finished with multiple hits as the blue & white closed the season out in style.
In the game-deciding first inning, Anthony Renz (Mansfield) hit a two-run double, Spencer Scorza (Monroe CC) had an RBI single, and Steven Goldstein (Stony Brook) had a three-run double to pace the big inning. The Dodgers sent 11 batters to the plate and collected six hits.
Niagara scored single runs in the second and fourth innings, but Hornell put the game out of reach with another big inning in the sixth. The Dodgers sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning including a two-run double by Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher), RBI doubles by Aaron Haag (Southeast Louisiana) and Renz, and an RBI single by Sean McCracken (Southern Nevada).
Haag added a two-run single in the seventh, and McCracken collected an RBI double in the ninth to score Chris Jansen (St. Joseph’s – IN) who had singled.
Haag led the offensive barrage with a 4-for-5, three RBI day. Goldstein was 4-for-6 with three RBI, Roeder was 3-for-6 with two RBI, Renz was 2-for-5 with three RBI, and McCracken was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Scorza finished 2-for-2 with an RBI while Zackery Melino (Monroe CC) allowed six hits and two earned runs in five innings of work to earn the win.
Cody Pentecost was 2-for-3 for the Power while Matt Brooks was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Tyler Simmons was 2-for-4 as well.
The Dodgers complete the regular season with a 23-17 mark. The team started the season 1-6 and have won 22 of their final 33 games.
The Oneonta Outlaws are the #1 seed with a 25-15 mark and will also have a bye in the first round. The Wellsville Nitros, the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs, and the Olean Oilers all finished 22-18 on the year. Based on tie-breakers, Wellsville will be the #3 seed, the Jr. Chiefs the #4 seed, and Olean the #5 seed. The Syracuse Salt Cats are the #6 seed with a 21-19 mark.
Wellsville will host the Syracuse Salt Cats at 4 p.m. on Wednesday with the winner heading to Maple City Park to begin a best of three series with the Dodgers on Thursday (7 p.m.).
