The Hornell Dodgers collected 14 hits in a 11-7 victory over the Wellsville Nitros on Sunday afternoon but were held to just two hits in a 3-0 loss to the Niagara Power on Sunday evening. The Dodgers are now 22-17 on the year with one game remaining in the regular season.
In Wellsville this afternoon, the Dodgers erased a Nitro 7-2 lead with a seven run fifth inning. Spencer Scorza (Monroe CC) connected on a grand slam, Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher) had a two RBI double, and Aaron Haag (Southeast Louisiana) had an RBI single in the big inning.
Jeff Beall (Urbana) made the lead stick with 5.1 innings of relief work. He allowed just two hits while walking one and striking out three to earn his second win in less than 24 hours.
Roeder finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, Jake Kenney (Genesee CC) was 2-for-4 with two doubles, while Steven Goldstein (Stony Brook), Anthony Renz (Mansfield), and Scorza were each 2-for-5. Haag also collected two hits in six at bats.
In the nightcap vs. Niagara Zach Uher took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before Goldstein broke it up with a single into the shortstop hole to lead off the inning. Uher finished with a two-hit shutout to earn his second win of the season. Uher walked two and struck out eight in the contest.
The Power collected 12 singles in the contest. They took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when they collected three singles and scored on a sac fly by Foley George. Niagara added to their lead in the fifth when they collected three singles to load the bases and scored on a double play. The added an insurance run one batter later on a RBI single by Tyler Simmons.
Scott Gillespie was 3-for-5 to lead the Power while Tyler Simmons and Perry Rigby were 2-for-4.
Jason Gray (Webster) was impressive out of the pen tossing three solid innings of relief allowed two hits and no runs. Stephen Stoklosa (Monroe CC) scatted ten hits and three runs in six innings of work.
The Dodgers conclude the regular season on Tuesday when they travel to Sal Maglie for a 3 p.m. contest with the Niagara Power.
Hornell is tied for third place in the NYCBL standings. Oneonta (23-15) is in first followed by Olean (21-15), Hornell (22-17) & Syracuse Jr. Chiefs (22-17), Wellsville (20-17) and Syracuse Salt Cats (20-17), Geneva Red Wings (17-18), Geneva Twins (17-19).
Key games tomorrow in the NYCBL include: Rochester @ Olean (completion of suspended game & one full game), Wellsville @ Niagara (dh), Geneva Twins vs. Geneva Red Wings (completion of suspended game and dh), Syracuse Jr. Chiefs @ Syracuse Salt Cats.
