OLEAN, NY – A quintet of batters posted multi-hit games, and the Wellsville Nitros romped to a 17-7 victory over the first-place Olean Oilers in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Olean High School, Friday.
Alec Bahnick (Bellarmine) Shane Barley (St. John Fisher), Thad Johnson (St. Bonaventure), Tyler Lau (Illinois-Springfield) and Cody Trinch (Thiel) combined for a dozen hits and 11 RBI as the Nitros erased an early deficit.
Bahnick and Trinch both connected on running-scoring singles in a four-run sixth, and the Nitros went on to score 12 unanswered runs. Bahnick plated Barley with the first run of the frame. Trinch applied the bookend with a base hit to score Kevin Herren (Bellarmine). In between, Lau came home when Johnson reached on an error. A Cameron Friess sacrifice fly scored Bahnick.
Wellsville added four in the seventh and two in the eighth. Bahnick singled home Barley in the seventh. Herren followed with a double scoring two. Friess made it a 15-7 game with an RBI base hit.
Lau and Bahnick capped the scoring with run-scoring singles in the eighth.
Luke Holm (Wabash) worked six innings for the win. The right-hander allowed seven runs on 11 hits. He struck out four and walked three. Holm is 2-3 on the season.
A trio of Nitro of relievers hurled three shutout innings to seal the win. Local product, Nick Anderson (San Diego St.) came on in the seventh with one aboard. The left-hander struck out the first batter he faced, got a ground out and picked off a runner at first.
Chance DuCharme (Francis Marion) retired the side in order in the eighth.
Izzy Velez (Fisher) worked a scoreless ninth.
Wellsville sent 12 the plate in the first inning. Johnson doubled home a pair, and the Nitros led 5-0 before the Oilers came to bat.
The first-place Oilers responded with four in the home half.
Austin Johnson (Tacoma CC) laced a one-out double and eventually scored on a groundout by Lee Grosscup (Mt. Union). Mike Fahrman (University of Florida) followed with a double, and Max Beermann (Villanova) delivered with his third home run of the season. Kody Johnston (Brewton Parker) walked and scored on Julien Plana (Nova Southeastern) double.
Olean took the lead in the second. Tim Ravel (Bloomsburg) and Johnson started the stanza with back-to-back base hits. Ravel scored on a Grosscup groundout, and Johnson came home on a Fahrman single.
The Oilers added a run in the third. Kyle Mann (Calif. U of Penn) reached after being hit by a pitch, stole a pair of bases and scored on a single by Ravel. Olean led 7-5.
The usually reliable Kyle McLain (Washington and Jefferson) took the loss. The right-hander gave up eight runs on seven hits in an inning and a third out of the bullpen.
Bahnick and Trinch each had three hits. Trinch drove in four.
Ravel collected three hits for the Oilers.
With the win, Wellsville (19-16) joins a three-way tie for third in the NYCBL standings with Hornell and the Syracuse Salt Cats.
Olean (21-12) has a one-game lead over Oneonta (22-15) atop the standings.
The same two teams square off Saturday in Wellsville. A noon first pitch is scheduled.
