HORNELL, NY — The Hornell Dodgers and Wellsville Nitros took turns scoring runs in a pivotal New York Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader on Wednesday. The Nitros collected 19 hits in the opener en route to a 12-1 victory in game one while the Dodgers collected 16 hits in a 17-8 game two victory.
In the opener Wellsville scored three in the 1st and added two more in the fifth before scoring four in the 6th to break the game open.
The Nitros collected 19 hits and had seven players finish with multiple hits. Alex Bahnick (Bellarmine) finished 4-for-6 with an RBI while Shane Barley (St. John Fisher) was 2-for-4 with five RBI including a three-run homer. Tyler Lau (Illinois-Springfield), David DeWolfe (Francis Marion), and Thad Johnson (St. Bonaventure) all had three hits and a RBI while Cameron Freiss and Scott DeJong each had two hits and an RBI.
Kyle Zambanini (Indiana University) pitched 8.1 innings allowing six hits and one run while walking two and striking out three.
Jake Kenney (Genesee CC) was 2-for-3 for the Dodgers while Dominic Olszta (Joliet Junior College) connected on a solo homer in the ninth to break up the shutout.
In the nightcap, the Dodgers scored five in the second and seven in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Hornell scored in every inning except the fourth.
Spencer Scorza (Monroe CC) led the Dodgers 16 hit attack with a 4-for-5, two RBI game. Steven Goldstein (Stony Brook) was 2-for-2 with two RBI, Sean McCracken (Southern Nevada) was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Aaron Haag (Southeast Louisiana) and Kenney were each 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Zackery Melino (Monroe CC) earned the win with 4.1 innings of work. He allowed five hits and five runs. Jeff Beall (Urbana) and Stephen Stoklosa (Monroe CC) finished off the game.
Clint Scarborough was 3-for-4 with two RBI for Wellsville while Christ Conley was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Hornell is now 19-16 on the year with five game remaining in the regular season. The Dodgers sit in tied for fourth place, three games behind first place Olean.
The Dodgers and the Nitros finish off the 10-game series versus each other on Thursday. The Dodgers currently lead the series 5-4. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. at Wellsville Elementary School.
