WELLSVILLE, NY — Shane Barley (St. John Fisher) and Cameron Friess (Texas St. U) paced the offense, and the Wellsville Nitros took a twinbill (8-7/6-3) from the Geneva Red Wings in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Wellsville Central Schools, Sunday.
Barley and Friess combined for 10 of Wellsville’s 22 hits on the afternoon putting the Nitros back in playoff position.
Friess plated Clint Scarborough (Wabash) with a one-out walkoff base hit as the Nitros erased a seven-run deficit in the opener.
Scarborough doubled off Geneva reliever, Lee Penzerella (Case Western Reserve) to set up the game winner.
Trailing 7-0 in the sixth, Wellsville sent nine to the plate. Scott DeJong (Felician) started the rally with a single and a stolen base. The NYCBL’s home run leader moved to third on a Barley base hit and scored on a Tyler Lau (Illinois-Springfield) ground out. Alec Bahnick (Bellarmine) singled, and Scarborough loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Friess followed with a double scoring two.
Barley made it a 7-4 game with a solo shot in the seventh.
Wellsville knotted the game at seven in the eighth. DeJong singled home Christ Conley (Canisius) and Cody Trinch (Thiel) and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Cam Stimpson (Monroe CC) sparked a four-run sixth for the Red Wings. The sophomore outfielder reached on a hit by pitch, stole two bases and scored on a Lee Miller (Davidson) single. Brandon Costa (Concord) put runners on the corners with a base hit, and Dustin Stuck (Alvernia) brought home the run with a sacrifice bunt. Zak Worsley (North Park) and Scott Shields (Cuesta) followed with RBI hits for the 7-0 lead.
Connor Semple (Penn St.-Erie) worked three and a third scoreless innings for his second win of the season.
Penzarella took the loss. The right-hander is 0-1.
Wellsville continued the momentum into the night cap scoring four in the first and never surrendering the lead.
Barley drilled his second round-tripper of the day scoring David DeWolfe (Francis Marion). Scarborough and Friess added two-out RBI base hits to set the Nitros on their way.
Geneva cut the lead to one in the third. John Dockins (Kutztown St.), Brian Weightman (St. Bonaventure) and Aaron Tovsky (Davidson) provided RBI hits in the stanza.
But Bahnick and Lau executed a double steal to score a run in the home half of the frame, and the Nitros took advantage of an error to get the insurance runs they needed.
Making his first appearance of the summer, Tanner Delahoy (Mercyhurst) gave up three runs on five hits and four walks for the win. The right-hander fanned four.
George Martin (Columbia) took the loss. Martin is 0-2 in 10 appearances on the campaign.
With the wins, Wellsville (16-15) put three games between themselves and the Red Wings (13-18).
Wellsville hosts the first-place Olean Oilers (19-9) on Monday. First pitch at Wellsville Central Schools is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Geneva gets a day off before traveling to Syracuse for a doubleheader with the Jr. Chiefs (19-12).
