WELLSVILLE, NY — The Hornell Dodgers rallied from a 3-1 deficit and doubled up the Wellsville Nitros 8-4 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action Friday afternoon at Wellsville Central schools. The Blue & White improved 16-14 on the year while Wellsville falls to 13-14.
The Dodgers got on the board in the first when Anthony Renz (Mansfield) singled home Sean McCraken (Southern Nevada).
Wellsville tied it right back up in the bottom of the first when Shane Barley (St. John Fisher) doubled home Scott DeJong (Felician) who had reached on an error.
The Nitros gained the lead in the third when DeJong scored on a throwing error and then made it 3-1 in the fifth when Dave DeWolfe (Francis Marion) singled home Cody Trinch (Thiel).
Hornell took advantage of two errors in the sixth to tie the game up. After two throwing errors, Spencer Scorza (Monroe CC) connected a two-run single to score Renz and Dylan Dunn (Hagerstown CC).
In the seventh, Aaron Haag (Southeast Louisiana), Renz, and Steven Goldstein (Stony Brook) all connected on RBI singles to give the Dodgers a 6-3 lead.
Cameron Freiss (Texas St. U) cut the lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh, but the Nitros would not score again.
Haag continued to swing a hot bat and added two insurance runs in the 8th when he drove a double off the wall to score two more.
Jimmy Gutowski (Monroe CC) earned his fourth win of the summer with 6.1 innings of six hit ball. He walked one and struck out three while allowing two earned runs. Jeff Beall (Urbana) allowed one hit in 1.2 innings of relief and Eric Schell (Penn State Greater Allegheny) worked a 1-2-3 frame to close the game.
Haag led the Dodgers with a 3-for-5 day with three RBI while Renz was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Goldstein was 2-for-5 with a RBI and Roeder was 2-for-5.
DeWolfe was 3-for-4 with a RBI for the Nitros.
Hornell begins a three game series with Olean on Saturday when they battle the Oilers at Olean High School at 5 p.m.
