HORNELL, NY — The Hornell Dodgers and Wellsville Nitros split a doubleheader on a gorgeous Thursday evening in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Maple City Park. The Dodgers won the opener 6-3 while the Nitros earned a 7-4 win in the nightcap in front of nearly 300 fans. Hornell is now 15-14 on the year while Wellsville is 13-13.
In the opener, Wellsville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st with a RBI grounder by Shane Barley (St. John Fisher), but Hornell answered right back with four runs in their half of the inning. Aaron Haag (Southeast Louisiana) hit a sacrifice fly, Anthony Renz (Mansfield) hit a RBI double, Steven Goldstein (Stony Brook) had an RBI groundout, and Spencer Scorza (Monroe CC) had am RBI single.
The Nitros scored single runs in the second and third to cut the lead to 4-3. Cody Trinch (Thiel) hit a sac fly in the second and Barley hit a sac fly in the third.
Hornell pushed their lead back to three with two runs of their own in the third. Dylan Dunn (Hagerstown CC) hit an RBI single and Goldstein hit a sac fly.
Both teams threatened but neither could get on the board the rest of the way. Jeff Beall (Urbana) came out of the bullpen in the fifth and tossed two shutout innings to earn the win. He allowed just one hit and struck out two. Eric Schell (Penn State Greater Allegheny) struck out the side in the seventh to earn the save.
Dunn was 3-for-3 with an RBI, Dominic Olszta (Joliet Junior College) was 2-for-2, and Goldstein drove in two runs for Hornell while Alec Bahnick was 2-for-3 while Barley was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI for Wellsville.
In the nightcap, Wellsville jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning. Barley scored Scott DeJong (Felician) with an RBI single and Kevin Herren (Bellarmine) drove home two with a two-out single.
Neither team could plate any runs until the sixth when David DeWolfe (Francis Marion) hit an RBI single, Bahnick drew a bases loaded walk, and two runs scored on a throwing error to give the Nitros a 7-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Goldstein singled home a run and scored on an error to cut the lead to 7-2.
In the seventh, Dunn continued to swing a hot bat and drove home a run with an RBI single. Goldstein cut the lead to 7-4 with an RBI single. With the tying run at bat, Jack Fowler induced a pop up to end his complete game effort.
Fowler allowed nine hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out nine Dodgers. Bahnick was 2-for-2 with an RBI, DeJong was 2-for-4, and Herren drove in two runs.
Goldstein was 3-for-4 with two RBI while Dunn was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Hornell and Wellsville battle again on Friday when the two travel to Wellsville Elementary School for a 5 p.m. start. The Dodgers and Nitros have split the first six games in the series.
