Jr. Chiefs shut out Hornell

HORNELL, NY — The Syracuse Jr. Chiefs shut out the Hornell Dodgers 8-0 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Maple City Park, Saturday afternoon.  The Jr. Chiefs improve to 13-9 on the year while the Dodgers fall to 11-13.

The Jr. Chiefs collected 15 hits and scored three runs in each of the third and fifth innings en route to their fourth win in a row.  Five different Jr. Chiefs collected multiple hits in the contest.

Nicholas Sinay (University of Buffalo) led Syracuse going 2-for-3 and two RBI while Aaron Pigna (Ave Maria) was 2-for-4 with two RBI.  Gary Jones (Delaware) was 2-for-2 with an RBI, Brian Burns (Ithaca) was 2-for-3 and Alex Caruso (St. John’s) was 2-for-4.

Michael Bittel (Seton Hill) was solid on the mound for the Jr. Chiefs.  He improved to 3-0 with seven shutout innings.  The right-hander allowed five hits and one walk while striking out five.  Alan Komorowski (Washington U) walked one and struck out three in the final two innings to close the game.

Dominic Olszta (Joliet Junior College) was the lone Dodgers with multiple hits finishing 2-for-3.  Kenny Smith (St. Joeseph’s – NY) allowed one run in 4.1 innings of relief.  He allowed five hits and two walks while striking out three.

The Dodgers are back in action tonight at 7 p.m. when they take on the Niagara Power in game one of a three-game series.

The Jr. Chiefs resume play after Tuesday’s NYCBL All-Star Game. Syracuse plays a pair at Sherrill, Wednesday. First pitch at Noyes Park is scheduled for 3 p.m.
