HORNELL, NY — The Hornell Dodgers used a four-run sixth inning to regain the lead en route to a 7-4 victory over the Niagara Power in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Maple City Park, Saturday evening. The Dodgers improve to 12-13 on the year while the Power fall to 9-14.
The Dodgers got on the board first in the thirdrd inning when Sean McCracken (Southern Nevada) connected on an RBI double.
Niagara answered right back with three runs of their own in the fourth inning keyed by a two-run triple by Michael Kerr (Houghton).
Hornell strung together three hits to start the sixth inning. Aaron Haag (Southeast Louisiana) singled, Anthony Renz (Mansfield) doubled, and Dylan Dunn (Hagerstown CC) doubled home a run. After an infield fly out, Jordan Wheaton (Alfred State) sent a double to right center to give Hornell a lead they would never give up. Michael Simmons (Montevallo) singled home Wheaton to make it 5-3.
Jake Kenney (Genesee CC) scored on a double play in the seventh to make it 6-3, and the Power scored on an RBI groundout by Hunter Lewis (Hampden-Sydney) to make it 6-4.
Wheaton gave the Dodgers another insurance run in the eighth when he connected on an RBI single to score Steven Goldstein (Stony Brook).
Nick Boyd (Central Connecticut) earned the win with 7.1 innings of work. He allowed 10 hits, four runs, and two walks while striking out two. Jeff Beall (Urbana) threw the final 1.2 innings allowing just one walk to earn the save.
Wheaton finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI on the day while McCracken and Simmons were each 2 for 4 with a RBI.
Lewis led the Power with a 2 for 4, 1 RBI day while Bobby Twitty was 2 for 4.
The Dodgers and the Power battle in a doubleheader at Maple City Park on Sunday. First pitch of game one is slated for 5 p.m. and both games are slated for 7 innings.
