WELLSVILLE, NY — The Hornell Dodgers connected on three homers as they defeated the Wellsville Nitros 7-1 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action Friday afternoon at Wellsville Central. The win improves the Dodgers to 11-12 on the year.
Anthony Renz (Mansfield) gave the Dodgers and early lead in the first when he hit a two run homer just out of the reach of the Nitro right fielder. Dylan Dunn (Hagerstown CC) stepped up next and sent a solo shot over the centerfield fence.
Neither team could put any runs on the board until the seventh. Wellsville had numerous chances throughout the game but stranded 12 runners.
In the seventh, Aaron Haag (Southeast Louisiana) launched a two-out two-run homer to left center to give the Dodgers two insurance runs.
Wellsville got on the board in the seventh, on an RBI single by Scott De Jong (Felician), but Hornell scored two more in the eighth. Spencer Scorza (Monroe CC) hit an RBI double and Jake Kenney (Genesee CC) laced a two-out single.
The Nitros loaded the bases in the 8th and had two runners on in the ninth but could not plate any more runs.
Jimmy Gutowski (Monroe CC) earned the win for Hornell. He allowed six hits, one unearned run, and three walks while striking out six. Jason Gray (Webster) got the final six outs.
Renz was 3-for-4 on the day and was the lone Dodger with multiple hits.
Shane Barley was 3-for-4 for Wellsville while Tyler Lau was 2-for-3.
Hornell plays a split doubleheader at Maple City Park on Saturday. They battle the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs at 3 p.m. and the Niagara Power at 7 p.m.
Wellsville travels to Geneva for a doubleheader with the Twins. First game is scheduled for noon.
