HORNELL, NY — The Hornell Dodgers erased a 4-1 deficit with five unanswered runs in the late innings to defeat the Wellsville Nitros 6-4 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Maple City Park. The win improves the Dodgers to 10-12 and drops the Nitros to 11-8.
The Dodgers took an early lead when Anthony Renz (Mansfield) connected on a RBI double in the first inning that scored Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher).
Wellsville took the lead with two unearned runs in the 3rd taking advantage of three Dodger errors. Shane Barley (St. John Fisher) drove the second run with a RBI single.
The Nitros made it 4-1 with single runs in the fourth and fifth. Scott DeJong (Felician) lifted a homer into the left field trees for his eighth roundtripper of the season in the 4th and Clint Scarborough singled home a run in the fifth.
Sean McCracken (Southern Nevada) looked to have hit a solo homer in the fifth that ended up being called a triple but came around to score on Renz’s second RBI double of the day.
Jake Kenney (Genesee CC) cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth when his bad hop single past the second basemen scored Spencer Scorza (Monroe CC).
The Dodgers took the lead for good in the 7th when they plated three runs. Hornell tied it when McCracken scored on a throwing error. Renz gave the Dodgers a 5-4 lead three pitches later with a RBI single. Gavin Stupienski (UNC Wilmington) connected on a RBI double to add an insurance run.
Wellsville tried to take advantage of a two-out ninth inning error and had the tying run on first base when Jason Gray (Webster) induced a ground out to end the contest and earn the save.
Aaron Haag (Southeast Louisiana) led the Dodgers 15 hit attack with a 4-for-5 day. Renz was 3-for-5 with three RBI, Roeder was 2-for-4, and McCracken was 2-for-5.
Scott DeJong was 2-for-4 with a RBI while Tyler Lau was 2-for-4 with two doubles.
Brett Buchanan (Webster) tossed 5.2 innings of relief to earn the victory. He allowed six hits and one earned run while striking out six to register first victory of the year.
The Dodgers have the 4th of July off but start a five game in three day stretch on Friday with a 5 p.m. battle with the Nitros in Wellsville.
