HORNELL, NY — The Geneva Red Wings scored five runs in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie en route to an 11-2 victory. The win gives the Red Wings a 3-1 series win in the four-game series played this weekend.
The Red Wings got on the board in the first with an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by Kenneth Rabin (Pomona-Pitzer). Geneva took advantage of an error to keep the inning going.
Hornell tied it up in the 3rd when Sean McCracken (Southern Nevada) lifted a solo homer into Adsit Street for his first round-tripper of the season.
The Dodgers took the lead 2-1 in the fourth when Gavin Stupienski (UNC Wilmington) scored on a passed ball after leading off the inning with a single. Hornell looked to add more runs in the inning, but Geneva starter Kevin Lee (Ramapo) danced out of trouble.
Geneva tied it in the top of the fifth as a light rain started to fall when Scott Shields (Cuesta) pushed a bunt down the line for an infield single to score Bret Viola (Stevens Institute of Technology).
The Dodgers threatened again in the fifth but stranded two more runners on base. The team stranded eight runners through the first five innings (13 for the game).
Geneva erupted for five runs on four hits and three walks in the sixth to take control of the game. Aaron Tovsky (Davidson) singled home the game-winning run before Viola had an RBI single. Cameron Stimpson (Monroe CC) had an RBI ground out, Shield collected a RBI single, and Stimpson scored on a wild pitch.
The Red Wings added an insurance run in the eighth and three more in the ninth to improve to 10-8 on the year. Shields finished 3-for-5 with five RBI on the day while Viola was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Brandon Costa (Concord U) was 2-for-3 and Stimpson was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Lee earned the win with five innings of work while the Red Wing bullpen allowed no runs and five hits in four innings of work.
McCracken was 2-for-4 while Spencer Scorza (Monroe CC) was 2-for-4 for the Dodgers.
Hornell is back at it on Monday when they host the Niagara Power for a 4 p.m. doubleheader. The first game is slated for nine innings while the second game will be seven innings.
The Red Wings travel to Olean for a tilt with the first place Oilers.
