HORNELL, NY — The Hornell Dodgers were down to their final out in the ninth inning versus the Geneva Red Wings but rallied to tie the game at 2-2 and won the game in the 10th when Jordan Wheaton (Alfred State) connected on a walk-off single.
The win snaps the Dodgers two game losing streak and improves Hornell to 9-10 on the year.
Geneva jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st when Casey Fox drove home Zak Worsley (North Park) with a RBI ground out. Worsley led off the game with a single and stole second and third.
The Red Wings made it 2-0 in the eighth when Worsley hit a slow roller to short that scored pinch runner Vernon Trice III (Oglethorpe).
Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher) cut the lead in half with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh that scored Spencer Scorza (Monroe CC).
Geneva tried to regain the two-run lead in the 8th but Dominic Olszta (Joliet Junior College) gunned down a Red Wing runner who tried to score on a fly ball to center.
The Dodgers were down to their final out in the ninth when Wheaton hit an infield single to short. Roeder kept the game alive with a single up the middle to bring up Sean McCracken (Southern Nevada). McCracken tied the game up when he sent a single into left field.
Chris Jansen (St. Joseph’s – IN) kept the Red Wings off the board in the 10th to set up the walk-off situation. Olszta led the inning off with a walk and went to second after a sac bunt by Michael Simmons (Montevallo). Scorza connected on a single and Gavin Stupienski (UNC Wilmington) walked to load the bases. With a 1-2 count Wheaton hit a single just over the drawn in outfield to plate Olszta for the game-winning run.
Zackery Melino (Monroe CC) and Thomas Bergjans (Haverford) were locked in a pitching duel for most of the night. Melino allowed just three hits and two runs in 6.1 innings of work while Bergjans allowed five hits and one run in seven innings of work. Melino walked four and struck out four while Bergans walked two and struck out seven.
Stupienski and Roeder each finished 3-for-4 for the Dodgers while Wheaton was 2-for-5. Jansen picked up his fourth victory of the season with 3.2 innings of two hit relief he walked two and struck out two.
Worsley and Robert Winemiller were each 2-for-5 for the Red Wings.
The Dodgers and Red Wings conclude their four game series on Sunday night at Maple City Park at 7 p.m.
