HORNELL, NY — The Hornell Dodgers fell behind 5-0 and rallied within 5-4 but were unable to complete the comeback as the Olean Oilers picked up their eighth win of the season. The loss snaps the Dodgers three-game winning streak and drops the team to 4-7 on the year.
Mike Fahrman (Florida) connected on a two-run single in the first to give the Oilers an early lead. The Oilers made it 4-0 in the third with a sac fly by Dylan Newton (Lyndon St. Coll) and a Julien Plana (Nova Southeastern) RBI single. They made it 5-0 in the fifth when Lee Grosscup (Mt. Union) hit a double and scored on two separate fielding errors.
Oiler starter Brandon Valentin (Nova Southeastern) held the Dodger offense in check until the sixth inning. Steven Goldstein (Stony Brook) connected on an RBI double off the top of the right field fence and then came around to score on an RBI double by Spencer Scorza (Monroe CC) seconds later.
Goldstein made it 5-3 in the eighth when he shot a double down the line and cut the lead to one when he scored after a throwing error after a Michael Simmons (Montevallo) single. With Simmons at second and two outs in the eighth, Olean went to their closer Derek Vail (Santa Fe CC) who retired all four batter he faced to earn the save and preserve the victory.
Valentin allowed six hits in six innings work to earn the win. He allowed two walks, struck out four, and was charged with two earned runs. Vail struck out two of the four batters he face to earn the save.
Grosscup was the lone Oiler with multiple hits finishing 2-for-4.
Dodger reliever Jeff Beall (Urbana) kept the Blue & White in the contest with six solid innings of relief. He allowed just three hits and one unearned run while walking two and striking out five.
Goldstein finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, Anthony Renz (Mansfield) was 2-for-3, and Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher) was 2-for-5.
