GENEVA, NY –The Hornell Dodgers collected 11 hits and made several key defensive plays as they defeated the Geneva Twins 5-3 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at McDonough Park. The win was the third straight triumph for the Dodgers who are now 4-6 as they finish the first quarter of the season.
Geneva got on the board first in the first inning when they scored two runs. John Cassidy drove in a run on a grounder to short and Greg Davis scored on a wild pitch.
Hornell cut the lead in the third inning when Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher) hit a sac fly. The team tied the game in the fourth inning when Anthony Renz (Mansfield) hit a double to score Dylan Dunn (Hagerstown) and took the lead when Max Franzone (FLCC) hit a sac fly two batters later.
Jordan Wheaton (Alfred State) added an insurance run in the sixth inning when he doubled home Franzone to make it 4-2.
Geneva cut it to 4-3 in the sixth on an RBI single by Kirby Campbell but Hornell answered right back in the seventh with a sac fly by Aaron Haag (Southeast Louisiana).
Jason Gray (Webster) stranded two runners in the seventh and then pitched 1-2-3 innings in both the eighth and ninth innings to seal the victory. Gray earned the save that allowed Connell Anderson (Wofford) to earn the win. Anderson scattered 10 hits in six innings of work. He allowed three runs, walked one, and struck out two.
Franzone was 2-for-3 with a RBI while Wheaton was 2-for-4 with a RBI for Hornell. Sean McCracken (Southern Nevada) and Dunn were each 2-for-5.
Daniel Iturrey continued his mastery of Dodger pitching finishing 3-for-4 for the Twins. Kirby Campbell was 2-for-4 with a RBI and Greg Davis was 2-for-4.
The Dodgers win the season series vs. the Twins 2-1.
Hornell returns to Maple City Park on Thursday night when they tangle with the Olean Oilers. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. The game is sponsored by McCarthy Tire (formerly Main Tire Exchange).
