HORNELL, NY — The Geneva Twins strung together hits in the seventh and eighth innings to break a 3-3 tie en route to an 8-5 triumph over the Hornell Dodgers in a Father’s Day contest at Maple City Park. The Twins scored two in the seventh and three in the eighth to earn their second win of the season (2-4).
The Dodgers got on the board first when Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher) scored on a wild pitch after leading the game off with a single. Hornell made it 2-0 in the fourth when Spencer Scorza (Monroe CC) and Gavin Stupienski (UNC Wilmington) executed a double steal that saw Scorza steal home.
Geneva strung together four hits and took a 3-2 lead, but Hornell answered right back and tied it a 3-3 on a sac fly by Sean McCracken (Southern Nevada).
The Twins took the lead for good in the seventh when Greg Davis (Louisiana-Lafayette) connected on an RBI double and Trey West (LeMoyne) followed that up with an RBI single.
Geneva added three insurance runs, all unearned, in the eighth to grab an 8-3 lead. Davis had the big hit, a two-RBI single.
Hornell cut the lead to 8-5 when Scorza connected on long homer to right center that plated Dylan Dunn (Hagerstown CC) who had doubled a batter earlier.
The Dodgers sent the tying run to the plate in the ninth after a single by Max Franzone (FLCC) and a double by Michael Simmons (Montevallo), but Karney Boff (Massachusetts Dartmouth) got the final two outs complete the save.
Daniel Iturrey (Emory) was 4-4 with two RBI to lead the Twins 15-hit attack while Davis was 3-5 with four RBI. Tommy Haas (Arkansas Pine Bluff) was 3-5. Nick Hedge (Penn St.) allowed eight hits in eight innings of work to earn the win while Boff got the final three outs for the save.
Dunn and Simmons were each 2-4 for the Dodgers while Roeder was 2-5.
The same two teams meet Monday for a special school day event with an 11 a.m. first pitch at Maple City Park.
