HORNELL, NY — The Hornell Dodgers collected 15 runs and 18 hits and set over 600 kids home happy as they defeated the Geneva Twins 15-3 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action Monday afternoon. The Dodgers snap a four-game slide and are now 2-6 on the year.
The Twins got on the board in the 1st when John Cassidy hit a sacrifice fly to right. Geneva threatened for more but Jimmy Gutowski (Monroe CC) wiggled out of trouble.
The Dodgers took the lead for good in the 3rd inning when Anthony Renz (Mansfield) sent a fly ball just over the short porch in center to get the blue & white on the board. His homer scored Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher) and Aaron Haag (Southeast Lousiana) who had both singled earlier in the inning.
The Dodgers put the game out of reach in the sixth sending 14 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs. Sean McCracken (Southern Nevada) had the big hit connecting on a bases-loaded triple. Spencer Scorza (Monroe CC) also connected on a two-run double in the inning.
Geneva answered back with two in the seventh, but the Dodgers capitalized on walks and some timely hitting to add four more runs in the eighth.
Four Dodgers finished with three hits on the day. Scorza was 3-3 with two RBI, McCracken was 3-6 with four RBI, Roeder was 3 -4 with an RBI, and Haag was 3- 6 with two RBI. Renz finished 2-6 with three RBI, Jake Kenney (Genesee CC) was 2-4 with two RBI, and Max Franzone (FLCC) was 2-4 with an RBI.
Gutowski pitched six innings of six hit ball to earn his first victory of the summer. He allowed just the first inning run while walking four and striking out two. Brett Buchanan (Webster) pitched the final three innings for the save.
Daniel Itturey led the Twins with a 3-3 day while Greg Davis was 2-3. Cassidy was 1-4 with two RBI.
The Dodgers hit the road the next two days. They battle the Rochester Ridgemen on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and then head to Geneva for a 7 p.m. contest with the Twins on Wednesday.
