HORNELL, NY — Hornell High School grad Dylan Dunn (Hagerstown CC) sent the home fans home happy with a game winning walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Hornell Dodgers to a 3-2 victory and a split of a NYCBL doubleheader on Sunday. The Olean Oilers won the opener 2-0.
The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when they loaded the bases and scored when Brett Buchanan (Webster University) was hit by a pitch. They held on to that lead until the top of the seventh when the Oilers rallied.
Tim Ravel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game and then Austin Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to give the Oilers the lead.
Hornell answered right back as Chris Roeder (St. John Fisher) singled and went to second on a sac bunt by Jake Kenney (Genesee CC). After a walk to Dominic Olszta (Joliet Junior College), Sean McCracken (Southern Nevada) connected on a single that tied the game up. Two pitches later, Dunn connected on a RBI single to lead the Dodgers to their first victory of the season.
Jimmy Gutowski (Monroe CC) didn’t figure in the decision but pitched five solid innings. He allowed five hits while striking out four. Jason Gray (Webster University) picked up the win.
McCracken was 2-4 with an RBI while Roeder finished 2-3.
Bill Brancatella allowed just two hits in five innings of work while striking out six for Olean while Max Beerman was 2 -3.
In the opener, Olean took advantage of two errors in the fourth inning that led to the only two runs of the game. Joe Chittester collected what turned out to be the game winning RBI with a double in the decisive fourth inning.
The Dodgers were held to just three hits in the contest with Jordan Wheaton (Alfred State) collecting a double. Tim Ravel finished 2-4 for Olean.
Nick Donofry earned the win with five solid innings of work. He allowed one hit, walked two and struck out three. Kyle McLain pitched the final two innings to earn the save.
Nick Boyd (Central Connecticut State) allowed three hits and two unearned runs in six innings of work for Hornell. He walked two and struck out four.
Hornell travels to Batavia and Dwyer Stadium on Monday for a 7 p.m. contest vs. the Niagara Power.
