AKRON, Ohio – No. 16/15 Dayton improved to 11-0 with its 90-59 victory over Akron (8-3) Tuesday night at Rhodes Arena.
Four Flyers scored in double figures including junior Cassie Sant and sophomore Andrea Hoover who put up a game-high 18 points. Senior Olivia Applewhite added 15 points, while senior Sam MacKay registered her first career double-double of 13 points and a career-high 10 assists. She also had seven rebounds.
Dayton won the battle of the boards 45-39 and was paced by sophomore Ally Malott’s 11 boards. The Flyers have not been beaten on the boards yet this season.
The Flyers led by as much as 26 on a Hoover layup that put UD up 46-20 with 4:31 to play in the first half.
The Zips clawed back and used a 13-4 run down the stretch to pull within 17. Dayton held a 50-33 lead at the half after shooting 47.5 percent from the floor, including 44.4 percent from three-point range (8-for-18). Hoover led Dayton at the half with 15 points. Malott pulled down seven rebounds in the first half for Dayton.
UD held the Zips without a field goal for the first 3:17 of the second half and rebuilt its lead to 26 – 59-33. Dayton led by as much as 33 in the second half, 70-37 with 11:32 to play in the game. Dayton’s defense held Akron to just two field goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to go up 72-40.
The Flyers play at Siena on Dec. 22 at 1 p.m. at the Alumni Recreation Center.
