TEMPE, Ariz. – No. 23/22 University of Dayton women’s basketball defeated UNLV 82-58 on the first day of the Arizona State Classic Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena.
Senior Sam MacKay paced UD with 18 points to go along with a career-high eight rebounds and six steals.
Sophomore Andrea Hoover had 14 points, all in the first half. Sophomore Ally Malott added 13 points and junior Cassie Sant had 12 points and seven rebounds. Senior Olivia Applewhite had nine rebounds to lead the Flyers on the boards.
Dayton out-rebounded the Lady Rebels 51-35. The Flyers have won the battle of the boards in all eight of their games this season.
The Flyers started the first half slow and the Lady Rebels led by five, 7-2, at the 16:36 mark. Hoover hit back-to-back layups to give the Flyers an 11-9 lead with 13:53 left in the half, UD’s first lead since the opening basket also by Hoover.
UNLV got back within 18-17 on a Kelli Thompson three with 10:34 but the Flyers used a 25-2 run from that point and held the Rebels to 0-for-9 from the field in that time. UD held a 42-19 lead at the half. The 19 points by UNLV is lowest point total the Flyers have allowed an opponent in a half this season.
UD plays host Arizona State Sunday, Dec. 2 at 4:30 p.m. ET in the championship game.
